Description
This St. Louis Union Station landmark sparked a lot of controversy around the time of its inception in Aloe Plaza. This Carl Milles work was originally entitled "Marriage of the Rivers"; the male and female sculptures represent the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. However, after the media printed articles speaking out against the nude statues, area citizens petitioned against the fountain. In the end, the nude sculptures remained, but the name was changed. The work became an official landmark in 1940. Frequently Asked Questions
